Ostrvo Pi-Pi Tajland, Phi-Phi Island Thailand

In the Andaman Sea, between island Phuket and Krabi town on Thailand mainland, under the Sun, naps one of the most beautiful islands in the world – tiny Phi - Phi. Phi- Phi and its epic beauty attracts those young in heart from all over the world.

The atmosphere in this tropical paradise is very specific. A lot of people consider this place a “home when they are away from home” and they stay for several months at this island. They live in local hostels or lodging-houses, they spend days on a beautiful sandy beaches and nights in beach bars where they dance, sing and party till dawn. Under million of stars big torches burn in a shallow water lightening up bodies of those who hug and kiss in the warm sea. Drinks are consumed mixed and not from glasses but from small buckets. Drinks are shared with everyone.

Phi-Phi is a favorite place of Swedes and divers from all over the world. The island consists of main one Phi-Phi Don and smaller one Phi-Phi Leh. Tourists are accommodated on the main one and small one is a spot for snorkeling since the underwater world is extremely beautiful and diverse.

That Phi-Phi Leh islet became famous in 2000. when film “The Beach” with Leonardo Di Caprio playing the main role was filmed there. The beauty of the beach, nature and an image of a hidden paradise attracted tourists from all parts of the planet.

On Phi-Phi Don one can find cheap accommodation (5- 15 euro) or a luxury hotel. People who are spending time on this island are relaxed, with smiling faces and they are disconnected from the rest of the world. This is a place where friendships are easily made and great romances are quickly born. Days spent on Phi- Phi island are days spent in another - magical world!

In the rock of Phi-Phi Leh there is a “Viking cave”. It got a name upon drawings of ancient boats similar to Viking boats that were found on the walls of the cave. In the cave there are lot of bird`s nests a key ingredient for famous Birds nest soup.

It sounds terrible but this soup is rich in nutrients which are aiding digestion, raising libido, alleviating asthma, improving focus, and an overall benefit to the immune system. The nests are built during the breeding season by the male swiftlet. They take the shape of a shallow cup stuck to the cave wall. The nests are composed of interwoven strands of salivary laminae cement. Both nests have high levels of calcium, iron, potassium, and magnesium. Bird`s nest soup is a delicacy in Chinese cuisine. Also it is one of the most expensive meals made of animal products. A bowl of this soup costs in Hong- Kong 30 -100 $ and kilogram of those nests costs between 2000 and 10.000 $.

Most na reci Kvaj, Bridge over the River Kwai

In the quiet province of Kanchanaburi about 130 km west of the capital city of Bangkok, towards Burma border, there is a famous railway “Bridge over the River Kwai”.

During the World War II a railway was made. This railway was intended to move men and supplies from Thailand to the Burmese front. The route traversed deep valleys and mountains. All the heavy work was
manually done as earth moving equipment was not possible. The workers were war prisoners mostly Australians, Dutch, British, Americans and Asians. About 16.000 war prisoners and 150.000 civilians lost their lives building this railway.

Their remains are reburied after war together at memorial graveyards. One of them is Kanchanaburi cemetery situated not far from notorious bridge and “Death railway” on which they died.

Close to cemetery there is a War Museum. All three places are testimony and warning that a war is a tragic nonsense.

Originally the bridge was brought, in pieces, all the way from Java to be reconstructed here. At the end of World War II it was destroyed in numerous air attacks by Allied bombers. After the war it was rebuild so today only round sections are original parts of the bridge.

The Bridge over the River Kwai doesn`t cross over the river Kwai but over the river Mae Klong. The director of the movie “Bridge over the River Kwai” didn`t know (or maybe he did know) that the railway didn`t go over river Kwai so it made a big confusion. When tourists started coming to Thailand to see world-wide famous Bridge, Thais got an idea and simply renamed part of the Mae Klong river (under the bridge and bit longer) into Kwae Yai.

Today when you visit this place the nature is so beautiful and tame that nothing indicates terrible events that happened seventy years ago. Only the bridge is bit scary, black, massive and iron like times in which it was made.

If you step on the bridge you must know that it has some hypnotic power and that if you walk over it you `ll somewhere in the middle of the river become aware that you are walking down the very narrow gauge with huge holes by it side through which you can drop into abyss. At that moment in the middle of the bridge panic will get you because no one will have courage to move aside so that you can pass. At some point you will be forced to hug someone in order to swop places and pass by each other. If you suffer from fear of heights maybe the fear will paralyze you and you`ll stay on the bridge “forever”. And it`s good to know that the railway is in a regular use! I didn`t know!!!

More details about war happenings can be found in the War museum.

Pozorište Alcazar, Alcazar Theatre

In the 2nd road of Pattaya (town at the coast, not far from Bangkok) there is a world-wide famous theatre Alcazar.

It was founded by Phettrakul family some twenty years ago. Grace while they move, sophistication and beauty of those theatre divas move the border between real and possible up to the stage of cultural shock! After this astonishing parade of femininity every modern woman cannot resist asking herself a question “Have I allowed myself too much?”

The show is a mixture of acting, story, magnificent stage design and costumes, state of art light and sound system. Each sequence of the show describes different culture so each visitor to the Theatre can find something for himself.

Ploveca pijaca Damnoen Saduak, Floating Market

Kroz nju protiče reka Mea Klong koju presecaju mnogobrojni kanali. Najpopularnije turističko mesto u ovoj oblasti je ploveća pijaca Damnoen Saduak.
About hundred kilometers west from Bangkok, towards Burma border there is Ratchaburi province ( The Land of the king), full of cultural heritage and historical sites. Mea Klong river runs through it crisscrossed by many canals - khlongs. The most popular tourist spot in this area is the floating market of Damnoen Saduak.

U spletu kanala odvija se život i trgovina lokalnog stanovništva.
In the net of canals local people live and trade.

Prodavci uz pomoć vesla na svojim plitkim drvenim čamcima guraju robu uz i niz kanale i trguju. Zbog jakog sunca nose šešire napravljene od bambusa i palminog lišća. Pijaca počinje jako rano i traje uglavnom do 11.00h.
Vendors paddle their shallow wooden boats up and down waterways and sell or barter their goods. Because of the strong sun radiation they wear hats made from bamboo and palm leaves. The markets start in very early morning and close about 11:00 a.m. Take a boat and take a ride up and down canals. You'll experience fascinating traditional life stile of South East Asia and understand the importance of the river as a mean of commerce and living. At narrow canals there is always traffic jam so you can get " stuck in traffic". Since you must start from Bangkok early in the morning, floating market is a good place to have breakfast. While you float up the stream you can order some food and drink from a passing by boat, or you can buy various fruits (if you are not afraid of eating and drinking other than in expensive hotels and restaurants).

Along canals there are market stalls with lot of various souvenirs and goods prepared for bunch of tourists which visit this market everyday. Buy something to keep a memory about this tiny corner of the planet which still doesn't want to wake up from old sleepy world… And of course, bargain is obligatory! If you are skilful you might get home a fine piece of real Thai silk bought at incredibly low price!

You can book a one-day trip to a floating market at any travel agency in Bangkok. Excellent tour is Damnoen Saduak - Bridge over river Kwae - Tiger Temple. Price is about 20 Euro (+boat ride,+ temple entrance ticket).
