Skadarlija Beograd, Skadarlija Belgrade

Jedna senovita ulica zvana Skadarlija boemska je četvrt starog Beograda.

One shadowy street called Skadarlija is a bohemian part of Belgrade.

When brewery (Bajloni) was built at the beginning of XIX century at the corner of Skadarska street a lot of taverns were opened as well. Actors, musicians, writers and journalists started visiting those places. It was a centre of bohemian life.

Memories of those past days can be found today in taverns: Skadarlija, Three Hats, Two Deer, Two white pigeons etc. Skadarlija was renewed in 1966 in order to bring back to life old times. Traffic was removed from the street, cobble pavement was placed again and famous taverns were redecorated.

U letnjim mesecima postaje otvorena pozornica pozorišnih predstava i raznovrsnih priredbi.

Today it is popular meeting place of Belgrade citizens and tourist from all over the world. During summer it becomes open stage for theatre and other kind of performances.

Two great Serbian writers Bora Stankovic and Djura Jaksic were spending their lives in Skadarlija. While working in Bajloni brewery as a clerk Bora Stankovic wrote and published novel “Impure blood”. Djura Jaksic writer and a painter was a rebellious artist always in a conflict with authorities. He was constantly persecuted and jailed. His paintings can be seen in a National Museum. In Skadarlija there is a House of Djura Jaksic where art exhibitions and book promotions take place. In front of that house there is a monument dedicated to this great artist.

The oldest tavern in the street is Three hats. It was opened in 1864 in a house where previously was craft workshop, which had three brass hats as a company sign. Numerous well known names of Belgrade bohemian life were creating their best works in this tavern and at the same time they were writing about that extraordinary place. In front of the building there is a monument to a strolling actor.

Skadarlija inspires artist today the same way it use to do it before. In tavern “Golden Jug” you can enjoy in charming interior design created by one modern Serbian painter.

Cvetne zavese, zidni sat, stara kaljeva peć i mnoštvo detalja donose sećanja na prošla vremena i život starog Beograda!

Floral curtains, wall clock, old tiled stove, and lot of details bring back memories of past times and life of ancient Belgrade!

Ostrvo Pi-Pi Tajland, Phi-Phi Island Thailand

In the Andaman Sea, between island Phuket and Krabi town on Thailand mainland, under the Sun, naps one of the most beautiful islands in the world – tiny Phi - Phi. Phi- Phi and its epic beauty attracts those young in heart from all over the world.

The atmosphere in this tropical paradise is very specific. A lot of people consider this place a “home when they are away from home” and they stay for several months at this island. They live in local hostels or lodging-houses, they spend days on a beautiful sandy beaches and nights in beach bars where they dance, sing and party till dawn. Under million of stars big torches burn in a shallow water lightening up bodies of those who hug and kiss in the warm sea. Drinks are consumed mixed and not from glasses but from small buckets. Drinks are shared with everyone.

Phi-Phi is a favorite place of Swedes and divers from all over the world. The island consists of main one Phi-Phi Don and smaller one Phi-Phi Leh. Tourists are accommodated on the main one and small one is a spot for snorkeling since the underwater world is extremely beautiful and diverse.

That Phi-Phi Leh islet became famous in 2000. when film “The Beach” with Leonardo Di Caprio playing the main role was filmed there. The beauty of the beach, nature and an image of a hidden paradise attracted tourists from all parts of the planet.

On Phi-Phi Don one can find cheap accommodation (5- 15 euro) or a luxury hotel. People who are spending time on this island are relaxed, with smiling faces and they are disconnected from the rest of the world. This is a place where friendships are easily made and great romances are quickly born. Days spent on Phi- Phi island are days spent in another - magical world!

In the rock of Phi-Phi Leh there is a “Viking cave”. It got a name upon drawings of ancient boats similar to Viking boats that were found on the walls of the cave. In the cave there are lot of bird`s nests a key ingredient for famous Birds nest soup.

It sounds terrible but this soup is rich in nutrients which are aiding digestion, raising libido, alleviating asthma, improving focus, and an overall benefit to the immune system. The nests are built during the breeding season by the male swiftlet. They take the shape of a shallow cup stuck to the cave wall. The nests are composed of interwoven strands of salivary laminae cement. Both nests have high levels of calcium, iron, potassium, and magnesium. Bird`s nest soup is a delicacy in Chinese cuisine. Also it is one of the most expensive meals made of animal products. A bowl of this soup costs in Hong- Kong 30 -100 $ and kilogram of those nests costs between 2000 and 10.000 $.

Matmata Tunis, Matmata Tunisia

At the south of Tunisia not far away from town Gabes in the mountain desert there is a village Matmata. This mysterious place hid under ground many centuries ago.

Berbers, ancient local inhabitants who live there even today, found out the way how to protect themselves from heat, cold and enemies who were devastating that territory. They built their houses under the ground. They would dig a hole 5 to 10m deep and about that size wide. That circle area of 10m diameter at the bottom was a yard from where small caves were dug in walls. Those small caves were rooms of the house.

Each cave had a purpose. One was a kitchen, another was a bathroom and others were bedrooms. If you visit this Berber home during summer time you will notice that rooms have optimal micro climate comparing to desert heat in the yard.

The house is connected to the external world with only one narrow corridor. The entrance to the corridor is skillfully hidden and blended into landscape. Kind hosts will treat you with home- made olive oil, tabouna (traditional oven baked bread) and honey. To refresh from heat you`ll be offered traditional very sweet mint tea. Since families who still live in this area live mostly on money that tourists spend it would be nice to leave some tips or to buy one of handicrafts made at the house. This troglodyte colony is unique even though there are several ancient underground settlements worldwide.

Landscape of Matmata region looks like a surface of an uninhabited planet or the Moon so it served as a spot where filming of famous film series “Star Wars” took place. In order to develop tourism many of these houses were converted into restaurants and hotels. In some of those hotels you will literally sleep in a low cave on an improvised mattress placed on the ground. Berbers are extremely beautiful and proud people who are after several thousand years nearly disappeared due to mixing with various invaders that were staying at the territory of today`s Tunisia. If you ever wish to sense just a bit of life of this ancient people, if you ever wish to be for a moment beautiful Berber or a mysterious Berber woman come and spend the night in Matmata house!
