Construction of the palace complex began in 1782, during the reign of Rama I. For the next 150 years it was a home to Thai Kings, Royal Court and administrative seat of government. Today, the complex is the spiritual heart of the Thai Kingdom.
It sits on the east bank of Chao Phraya River which is the place where busy life of Bangkok citizens is happening. The Palace is protected by a defensive wall of 1,900 meters in length, which encloses an area of 218,400 square meters.
Within the palace complex are several impressive buildings including Wat Phra Kaew (Temple of the Emerald Buddha), which is considered the most important Buddhist temple in Thailand.
